Reading: Please read at least four nights and record on your log. Math: Please complete the story problems, play games and record your games on your math log. Math Home Links: pages 207-213. The reading and math logs are due Monday, April 20. Spelling/Word Study: Please study your spelling words: badge, pledge, stage, huge, change, and there’s. We will have our spelling test on Thursday. Social Studies: I have copied the information sheet about the Georgia project on the back of this newsletter. Reading Workshop: We will continue our study of Hansel and Gretel fairy tales. The children will identify the different roles of the characters. We will look for the hero, villain, sidekick or quirky advisor. Do you notice typical patterns of behavior in one type of character? Do you see these characters in modern stories? We are comparing the different versions of Hansel and Gretel. We have at least four different books. Writing Workshop: The children worked hard on their Father’s books. The books are thoughtful and sweet. We will start our Opinion /Persuasive unit. Math Workshop: Unit ten introduces counting back change. This is a difficult skill and most second graders need extra help. Children love to play store, and Math Home Link page 209 tells you how to play. We will focus on place value using numbers up to the “ten-thousands” place. Math Facts for unit ten: Automaticity: +/- 0 and +/- 1 facts, doubles facts (2+2, 4+4, 8+8), and sum-equals-tens facts (6+4, 3+7, 9+1). Proficiency: addition facts with sums equal to 18 or less, and subtraction facts with 18 or less as the minuend. They can read poetry and nonfiction too. The children should read more than four days when possible. Math: Home Link pages 185-193, story problems, and games. Please record your math games on the log. Many children need to practice math facts. The logs are due Monday, March 30. Spelling/Word Study: Please study your spelling words: scruff, string, stripe, scratch, and stray. We will have our spelling test on Friday. (Mrs. Johnston is asking questions about the spelling words on the spelling test. Please don’t worry if your child misses several of these questions. They are still learning. The questions on the homework sheet should help them.) During word study, we are continuing our study of the three letter blends using r. Reading Workshop: We will practice reading several poems as a choral reading. We will share our poems at the Poetry Celebration. Writing Workshop: We are editing our poems for our poetry books. We will look at how poets use punctuation. Can we try some of their ideas in our poems? Math Workshop: We will weigh items using ounces and pounds. Then we will discuss the metric units of weight using grams and kilograms. We will have our assessment on Measurement. Math Facts for unit nine: Automaticity: +/- 0 and +/- 1 facts, doubles facts (2+2, 4+4, 8+8), and sum-equals-tens facts (6+4, 3+7, 9+1). Proficiency: addition facts with sums equal to 18 or less. They can read poetry and nonfiction too. The children should read more than four days when possible. Math: Home Link pages 171-182, story problems, and games. Please record your math games on the log. Many children need to practice math facts. The logs are due Monday, March 23. Spelling/Word Study: Please study your spelling words: throw, scrape, stretch, shrug, and spray. We will have our spelling test on Friday. Mrs. Johnston is asking questions about the spelling words on the spelling test. Please do the activities on the spelling sheet at home. During word study, we are studying the three letter blends using r. Reading Workshop: We will continue with book clubs and discussing poetry. Please read some poetry at home. We are sending home some fun poems to read. Writing Workshop: We will read poems about ordinary things. How do poets look at ordinary things with new eyes? Can you write a poem about a pencil, book, or a ceiling? Then we will compare things by introducing similes and metaphors. The sky was a beautiful jewel (metaphor). Your smile is as bright as the sun (simile). Math Workshop: We will study perimeter, and we will discuss measuring longer distances using miles and kilometers. When you are driving, please point out the miles/kilometers on your car, and discuss the distance between two locations. You might take a walk in your neighborhood and measure the miles. Then we will explore area using square inches and centimeters. Math Facts for unit nine: Automaticity: +/- 0 and +/- 1 facts, doubles facts (2+2, 4+4, 8+8), and sum-equals-tens facts (6+4, 3+7, 9+1). Proficiency: addition facts with sums equal to 18 or less. Social Studies: We will continue our study of the different geographic regions of Georgia: Blue Ridge Mountains, Appalachian Plateau, Valley and Ridge, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain. Math: Home Link pages 143-147, story problems, and games. Please record your math games on the log. Many children need to practice math facts. The logs are due Monday, February 9. Spelling: Please study your spelling words: throw, chopping, baking, cried, and wished. We will have our spelling test on Friday. We are learning when to change y to i when adding ed. Reading Workshop: Mrs. Johnston is reading The Storm by Cynthia Rylant. The children are writing the gist of a chapter using about fifteen words. Also, we are noticing the harder vocabulary words and discussing the meanings. The children should look for context clues to help figure out the meanings of new words. Examples of vocabulary words from The Storm: beacon, schooner, jolted, agitated, keen, harbor, and solitary. Mrs. Johnston has started giving individual reading assessments. She will share the results at conferences. Writing Workshop: We will finish our study of realistic fiction. Then children will read poetry for our next unit of study. Math Workshop: We will make a frequency table of arm spans and graph the information on a bar graph. The children are learning how to find the median of a set of data. Then we will have our unit seven assessment. Our next unit emphasizes fractions. Please talk about fractions when you share a pizza or cook at home. Math Facts for unit eight: Automaticity: +/- 0 and +/- 1 facts, doubles facts (2+2, 4+4, 8+8), and sum-equals-tens facts (6+4, 3+7, 9+1).
