Johnston & Payne Lion Gazette
March 23-27, 2015
Important dates to mark on your calendar:
Reading: Read at least four days for about 20 minutes each day. Record your reading on your reading log. The children should bring home a “just-right” fiction book from a series. They can read poetry and nonfiction too. The children should read more than four days when possible.
Math: Home Link pages 185-193, story problems, and games. Please record your math games on the log. Many children need to practice math facts. The logs are due Monday, March 30.
Spelling/Word Study: Please study your spelling words: scruff, string, stripe, scratch, and stray. We will have our spelling test on Friday. (Mrs. Johnston is asking questions about the spelling words on the spelling test. Please don’t worry if your child misses several of these questions. They are still learning. The questions on the homework sheet should help them.) During word study, we are continuing our study of the three letter blends using r.
Reading Workshop: We will practice reading several poems as a choral reading. We will share our poems at the Poetry Celebration.
Writing Workshop: We are editing our poems for our poetry books. We will look at how poets use punctuation. Can we try some of their ideas in our poems?
Math Workshop: We will weigh items using ounces and pounds. Then we will discuss the metric units of weight using grams and kilograms. We will have our assessment on Measurement.
Math Facts for unit nine: Automaticity: +/- 0 and +/- 1 facts, doubles facts (2+2, 4+4, 8+8), and sum-equals-tens facts (6+4, 3+7, 9+1). Proficiency: addition facts with sums equal to 18 or less.
Social Studies: The children are working in small groups to make a map of the state of Georgia.

Important dates to mark on your calendar:
- Our Poetry Celebration is Friday, March 27 at 8:15 to 9:00.
- Father’s Day/Special Person Day is Monday, April 13 at 8:15 to 9:15. I encourage the mothers to attend the Poetry Celebration, and the fathers to attend the April 13 event. Please let me know if you have a conflict and I will try and help. If a parent cannot make an event, a grandparent, special relative or friend is welcome to attend. We try to limit the attendance to one guest per child because of space, and it can be overwhelming for the children when we have too many guests. Thank you.
- The children need to bring their music scripts to school on the following music days: Thursday, March 26; Monday, March 30; and Wednesday, April 8. The children will perform on April 10. Mrs. Beverly will send out an invitation with the time. It should be around 12:00. An idea: make a copy of your child’s music script and put one copy in their book bag or folder. Then the script will always be at school. Please help your child learn their lines for the play.
