Johnston & Payne Lion Gazette

Happy Birthday to John!
Thank you for the beautiful flowers and sweet cards. You are a special group of parents and children.
Homework: Reading: Read at least four days for about 20 minutes each day. Record your reading on your reading log. The children should bring home a “just-right” fiction book from a series. They can read nonfiction too. The children should read more than four days when possible.
Math: Home Link pages 135-141, story problems, and games. Several of the home links are challenging. The children might need help with pages 135 and 141. Please record your math games on the log. Many children need to practice math facts.
The logs are due Monday, February 2.
Spelling: Please study your spelling words: remember, gentle, stuck, passing, and saving. We will have our test on Friday.
Reading Workshop: The children will continue reading books in a series, and we will meet with book clubs.
Writing Workshop: We will continue our study of realistic fiction.
Math Workshop: We are discussing weight. When you go to the grocery store, try to weigh some fruits or vegetables. Also, look in your pantry and show the children the weights on cans and packages. The children would enjoy measuring things with rulers, tape measures, and yard sticks. They need practice with hands-on measuring.
Math Facts for unit seven: Automaticity: +/- 0 and +/- 1 facts, doubles facts (2+2, 4+4, 8+8), and sum-equals-tens facts (6+4, 3+7, 9+1). Proficiency: addition facts with sums equal to 13 or less.
Social Studies: We are studying the Cherokee and Creek Indians.
We are looking forward to Jerry Craft's visit to the Lower School on February 12! Books are available for order, personalized with an autograph, from his website: www.jerrycraft.net
