Homework
Reading: Read at least four days for about 20 minutes each day. Record your reading on your reading log. The children should bring home a “just-right” fiction book from a series. They can read poetry and nonfiction too. The children should read more than four days when possible.
Math: Home Link pages 171-182, story problems, and games. Please record your math games on the log. Many children need to practice math facts. The logs are due Monday, March 23.
Spelling/Word Study: Please study your spelling words: throw, scrape, stretch, shrug, and spray. We will have our spelling test on Friday. Mrs. Johnston is asking questions about the spelling words on the spelling test. Please do the activities on the spelling sheet at home. During word study, we are studying the three letter blends using r.
Reading Workshop: We will continue with book clubs and discussing poetry. Please read some poetry at home. We are sending home some fun poems to read.
Writing Workshop: We will read poems about ordinary things. How do poets look at ordinary things with new eyes? Can you write a poem about a pencil, book, or a ceiling? Then we will compare things by introducing similes and metaphors. The sky was a beautiful jewel (metaphor). Your smile is as bright as the sun (simile).
Math Workshop: We will study perimeter, and we will discuss measuring longer distances using miles and kilometers. When you are driving, please point out the miles/kilometers on your car, and discuss the distance between two locations. You might take a walk in your neighborhood and measure the miles. Then we will explore area using square inches and centimeters.
Math Facts for unit nine: Automaticity: +/- 0 and +/- 1 facts, doubles facts (2+2, 4+4, 8+8), and sum-equals-tens facts (6+4, 3+7, 9+1). Proficiency: addition facts with sums equal to 18 or less.
Social Studies: We will continue our study of the different geographic regions of Georgia: Blue Ridge Mountains, Appalachian Plateau, Valley and Ridge, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain.
