Johnston & Payne Lion Gazette
February 2 - 8, 2015
Math: Home Link pages 143-147, story problems, and games. Please record your math games on the log. Many children need to practice math facts.
The logs are due Monday, February 9.
Spelling: Please study your spelling words: throw, chopping, baking, cried, and wished. We will have our spelling test on Friday. We are learning when to change y to i when adding ed.
Reading Workshop: Mrs. Johnston is reading The Storm by Cynthia Rylant. The children are writing the gist of a chapter using about fifteen words. Also, we are noticing the harder vocabulary words and discussing the meanings. The children should look for context clues to help figure out the meanings of new words. Examples of vocabulary words from The Storm: beacon, schooner, jolted, agitated, keen, harbor, and solitary. Mrs. Johnston has started giving individual reading assessments. She will share the results at conferences.
Writing Workshop: We will finish our study of realistic fiction. Then children will read poetry for our next unit of study.
Math Workshop: We will make a frequency table of arm spans and graph the information on a bar graph. The children are learning how to find the median of a set of data. Then we will have our unit seven assessment. Our next unit emphasizes fractions. Please talk about fractions when you share a pizza or cook at home.
Math Facts for unit eight: Automaticity: +/- 0 and +/- 1 facts, doubles facts (2+2, 4+4, 8+8), and sum-equals-tens facts (6+4, 3+7, 9+1). Proficiency: subtraction facts with 13 or less as the minuend.

- Thank you for the beautiful flowers, sweet cards, and the gift to Children’s Health Care in my mother’s memory. It was perfect because my mother loved children. I can remember how she took all my cousins and neighborhood children to the beach. She taught Will, my son, to roller-skate. When I was little and it snowed in eastern NC, she would pull us on a roasting pan. I am blessed to have so many wonderful memories. I am taking a personal day this Friday, because it is a special birthday for Mr. Johnston. We had planned this trip back in the fall. Please email Kendall Ratterree if you need anything on Friday. She will take good care of the children. Thank you!
- Author and storyteller, Carmen Deedy gave a presentation in our LS library. The children listened for forty-five minutes to Ms. Deedy tell a story about checking out her first library book. We laughed so hard. Ask your child to share.
- Chapel is on Tuesday.
- Parents, several children are going to the LS bookstore before school each day. Often, the lines are long and they are late for class. Please limit your child’s visits to the bookstore to one time a week. The children need to put all bookstore items in their book bags and keep the items at home. Thank you for your help.
- We are happy to celebrate summer birthdays during the school year. Please let us know when you would like to join us for lunch to celebrate your child’s birthday.
- Start thinking about Valentine cards. Please make or buy a card for each child in our room. Remember to sign your name on the cards. Please do not include the sugar sticks in your valentines because the loose sugar attracts ants. Remember we will have treats at the party. Please wait to bring in your valentines until Friday, Feb. 13. I have Valentine bags for the children to collect the cards.
