Johnston & Payne Lion Gazette
April 13-19, 2015
Reading: Please read at least four nights and record on your log.
Math: Please complete the story problems, play games and record your games on your math log. Math Home Links: pages 207-213.
The reading and math logs are due Monday, April 20.
Spelling/Word Study: Please study your spelling words: badge, pledge, stage, huge, change, and there’s. We will have our spelling test on Thursday.
Social Studies: I have copied the information sheet about the Georgia project on the back of this newsletter.
Reading Workshop: We will continue our study of Hansel and Gretel fairy tales. The children will identify the different roles of the characters. We will look for the hero, villain, sidekick or quirky advisor. Do you notice typical patterns of behavior in one type of character? Do you see these characters in modern stories? We are comparing the different versions of Hansel and Gretel. We have at least four different books.
Writing Workshop: The children worked hard on their Father’s books. The books are thoughtful and sweet. We will start our Opinion /Persuasive unit.
Math Workshop: Unit ten introduces counting back change. This is a difficult skill and most second graders need extra help. Children love to play store, and Math Home Link page 209 tells you how to play. We will focus on place value using numbers up to the “ten-thousands” place.
Math Facts for unit ten: Automaticity: +/- 0 and +/- 1 facts, doubles facts (2+2, 4+4, 8+8), and sum-equals-tens facts (6+4, 3+7, 9+1). Proficiency: addition facts with sums equal to 18 or less, and subtraction facts with 18 or less as the minuend.
